Little Vikes (Ages 4-5)
2 weeks (half days)
Here is a special day camp that offers a variety of learning
opportunities in an introductory camping experience for four
and five year old boys and girls. Each day begins and ends at
the YMCA. In between, campers are transported by bus to many
parks and places of interest. Four of the days will be
highlighted by special trips to the Great Plains Zoo, a trip
to Palisades State Park, and a morning at Leif Ericson Day
Camp with a horse drawn wagon ride. Little Vikes will swim
three times per week in our shallow YMCA Training Pool. The
close staff ratio and fun toys help insure a positive water
experience and fun.
Leif Ericson Day Camp (Ages 6-9)
The heart of the Leif Ericson experience is found in the
activities of the small close knit group of campers who, with
their counselor, carry out a large variety of activities. In
this secure world, a child can walk and climb, fish and swim
and make new friends. There are horses to ride, campfires to
enjoy and stories to be told. There are unique playgrounds,
friendly competition and cooperation with noisy times and
quiet moments, serenity, happiness and confidence to be
shared. The six and seven year old campers will finish their
camp experience at the conclusion of our Parent’s Night
Program. After the Family Night program comes the exciting
time for the eight and nine year old campers as they head into
the night for the experience of a "Leif Ericson overnight."
Campers gather at Campfire Point for an inspirational campfire
before returning to their individual campsites for roasting
hotdogs and smores.
Tepeetonka (Ages 10-13)
This is a unique camping experience that has a reputation of
instilling traditional values through the example of a
wonderful staff, inspirational campfire programs and opening
reflections each morning at beautiful Campfire Point. Lunch
provided daily for Tepeetonka campers. Campers will build new
friendships and increase self-esteem as they go through their
days at camp participating in activities such as archery,
rafting, crafts, nature, bb guns, and horses along with camp
wide activities like the Scavenger Hunt and the Water War. Off
camp activities such as sliding at Wild Water West Water Park
are also included in camp fees. Tepeetonka campers will
experience two distinctive overnights during their two-week
experience. Our corral will be the site where campers will
learn about saddling, riding, and the history of horses as
part of our Tepeetonka horse program. Tepee campers will be
challenged on our state-of-the-art High Ropes Course that is
the largest course in the state of South Dakota. The course
increases self-confidence, team building, courage, and a sense
of accomplishment in a safe environment.
Leadership Camp (Ages 14-15)
This camp was created especially for 14 and 15 year olds.
14-15 year olds are too old to be a camper but are too young
to be a staff member, so why not give them the best of both
worlds? TLC will give campers the camping experience and
excitement of a camper, mixed with the challenges and
responsibilities of a staff member! Our goal is for our
campers and staff to grow through our programs; to be healthy,
self-reliant, and great leaders in our community. Campers and
staff will always begin their day at camp but will travel
throughout Sioux Falls and its surrounding areas the whole 2
weeks. Lunch is provided daily for TLC campers. Besides the
traditional camp activities, TLC offers a day as a college
student at the University of Sioux Falls. The heart of the
program comes from the lifelong leadership skills they will
learn from community service projects, being a Junior and
Senior Counselor for a day, and exposure to business
community. Once a camper turns 16 years old they are eligible
to apply for a job at camp. JC’s assist in leading many of the
core activities at camp; camp activities such as fishing,
boating, outback program, air rifles, horses, lunch program,
puppet theater, etc. It is an excellent way to build your
resume early with great leadership experiences. JC’s are also
eligible to become Senior Counselors before outside
applicants.
